Okay, so here's the deal. I am now NYC and I will try to go for as many a cappella performances as I can while I'm there.
So tonight, I saw Blue Jupiter at Don't Tell Mama. Not heard of them? Shame on you! Their album Ear Candy was nominated for the CARA best contemporary album a couple of years ago. Blue Jupiter is a four-man band with a unique pop-funk style (sounds like TTT yea?). Well, Blue Jupiter recently transplanted themselves to NY and there has been some membership changes (welcome Price Thomas!). From what I've heard, they are busy finishing up their studio album Realigned, which, according to Chris Chatham (Tenor 1) should be out around Sep/October.

Interestingly, the performance tonight involved Jonathan Minkoff (Tenor/Baritone/Bass/CASA President) - who apparently has been gigging with Blue Jupiter for the past 3 months and tonight would be his last performance with them. Overall, the performance was energetic, fun and interactive. They've certainly got some tight vocals going there and their style is definitely unique. So don't expect overly processed vocals. They did try to do improvisational a cappella with suggestions from the audience (with words like God, chartreuse and North Dakota...). Suffice to say, it failed miserably, but it was all fun.
Above all, Blue Jupiter seems to be a great band, and they were approachable and friendly (unlike some vocal bands I've talked to... and trust me, I've gone for a lot of these). After this performance, I feel rather rejuvenated - I've been feeling rather jaded about a cappella lately. Sometimes I feel like dropping out of my "serious" professional career to do music full-time. You know, it's like when I listen to a catchy song on the radio, I start to visualize the vocal arrangement in my head... and it feeeeeeels good. Ah well.
And I've just heard that Duwende will be performing at the end of the month. I'll try to be there to check them out. I heard that they're gooooood.
