Big thanks to all those who were down at the Kallang Theatre last night for the A Cappella Feste. The a cappella community is growing stronger and more vibrant every year!
Tonight, we reveal to you our Secret Diary. As of now (9 Sept 11.30am) , there are only a few tickets left for Saturday's show. We would love for you to be there. Grab the tickets before they are gone.
See you at the Esplanade.

New York A Cappella Odyssey Part 2: Duwende |

Thankfully I got out of work early enough to go watch Duwende in action last Friday. I think there's a trend that all NYC based vocal bands end up gigging at pubs. A great idea, but I'm concerned about its applicability back in Singapore. It's definitely a good way to screen away young listeners (those below 21yo will not be allowed entry to these establishments) and given that most a cappella afficianados in Singapore are relatively young (high-school age), I'm not sure if local groups would want to take up this idea.
The show got off to a late start; I think there was some mic'ing/feedback issues with the VP (Ed Chung). The wait was worth it. Their opening song was a funky, hiphop, rap about the group. Actually, all the songs that night were eqully funky. Abbey Janes, the only female singer in the group, has a nice alto voice that sits so well the rest of the group. Ed's percussion is accurate and thumping (I swear my seat was shaking everytime he vocalized a kick drum). Jason's tenor voice was also refreshing, stylized (but not too much) and soaring. Geoffrey's rapping is interesting, but it was kinda mumbled that night- I couldn't understand a fair chunk of what he rapped. Morgan, the tenor/baritone, took the lead for many of the songs that night and he sang well (what can I say... :)). Last but not least, Ari's bass was great. Althought I think Duwende so have some variety in their arrangement as Ari seemed to be singing similar sounding basslines.
Pomper. Yes, Pomper. The song they closed the evening with. It's mindblowing :). I've not heard such an infectious a cappella song in a looong while. And you know what? This song in in French. Yes. But I swear I heard them sing "si beh cool". Hahaha, I'm sure it's something proper in French. This song was featured in the EP (which I do not have). But I highly recommend getting Duwende's newest album Screaming Radio. Very well-produced and energetic. I think it won several CARA awards too.
So if you're in the NY area, find out if Duwende is playing, and drag your ass there! |
